Here are a couple pictures of cheap in-house confined space training options to challenge your crew.

The following is a description of a machinery rescue call from Andrew Brassard and the Milton (Ontario) Fire Department. They received the call around 11:30 pm a few days back for a man caught in a machine at the Leaver Mushroom Plant. At the end are some leasons learned and other things to think about. Back at the May 2013 BGSU State Fire School while teaching in the heavy rescue class, a group of instructors were passing around some newer pieces of equipment to the rescue world. One was the UFO Rigging Cube.

There are three separate parts to this post, but lots of good stuff to think about.

One of the Milton, Ontario Fire Department crews set up a scenario where they had to rescue a “patient” from the bottom of the cliff… but they had to go through and around several trees at the edge of the cliff. Rattlesnake point (where they get most of their rope calls has some pretty tricky edges with overhangs and trees ...

The scenario is a husband and wife are snaking the basement floor drain and the husband sticks his arm down the drain hole to clear some debris when the wife turns the snake on. The husband becomes entrapped in the snake and the drain. So we have to cut the concrete to get the pipe out... then dissect the pipe... then cut his finger out of the auger.

Andrew Brassard sent this simple machinery extrication drill over. Brass said if you google "hand stuck in shredder" you will see it happens quite frequently... along with all sorts of other things.

To be honest, I had never even thought about having to extricate a kid from a safe. Is it possible, you bet. Just google "kid trapped in a safe". Think about all the safes in Dick's Sporting Goods, Walmarts, Gander Mountains, etc...
