Strip Mall Remodel – A Time To Take A Look

FF Gadd took a couple pictures of a strip mall that is getting a bit of a face lift.  We don’t always get a chance to see the inside guts of overhangs and facades, so be sure to take advantage if an opportunity like this happens in your area.

The new facades above the anchor stores are much larger than the old ones for this strip mall.  It’s not a bad idea to set up your truck and take a look from above or walk the roof to see what obstacles have changed.

As you look in and around these void spaces you may see some pretty substantial steel overhead.  In the picture below you will see the beam spanning the entrance-way to one of the stores.

Lightweight or engineered wood products are also common findings.  Be sure to make note of the void spaces and where they go.  Also, predict collapse hazards for both the facades and structural components, then note it on your preplans.
