FD vs. Aircraft Carrier Operational Similarities – Company Drill

This training idea was sent from David Walsh, Chair of the Fire Science Program at Dutchess Community College in NY.

In this video about an aircraft carrier, note the many parallels between their operation and an FD incident scene operation. The entire video is only about 10 minutes but the stuff that can be related to the FD starts around the 3 min mark (really shows the expansive power of steam).

Look at these parallels:

Air Boss= FD IC- establishes the Strategy

Bubble = FD Ops Section Chief- egst that tactics accomplished, gives teams the vital info they need- wind, weather, clear for take off, “GO” etc

Division of Labor- every team has a specific but separate assignment (but they are all interdependent on each other) – each team is identified by the color of their shirt (including the safety folks, hmm sounds sorta like FD vests)

Helicopter is always in the air before any plane takes off- it remains in the air anytime a plane is airborne = FD (2 in – 2 out / RIT)

Planes are refueled/maintained/readied before launch=FD Rehab

Planes are held back at catapult by “Hold Back Bar”= Staging

Catapult piston launches plane = Ops Section Chief – gives each team a specific assignment

7 different types of aircraft on board = different FD tasks –  search/rescue , fire confinement/control, ventilation, utilities, back up line, utility control, overhaul, etc, etc

They use cut-out models of each aircraft to help them control operations  = Command Board

Pass it on!
