The Northwest Ohio Region 1 USAR team and area firefighters trained in a retired mill facility that is slated for demolition.
We used an electric jackhammer on block walls and poured / rebar reinforced 5″ thick walls during several stations. The following are a few ways members of the team found to make life easier when using the tool.
Holding the jackhammer by yourself is possible.
Use a sledgehammer to support the working end of the tool with two other rescuers.
- By drilling a hole above the opening you are making, a piece of rebar and webbing can be pushed through. Now you have a means to support the working end of the tool.
Similar to the webbing tip above, except with a body cord and a prusik. This allowed easier vertical maneuvering.
